Swinging
(hand pulled intaglio print)
dimensions: width=9", height=12"
An intaglio such as this one is produced by using acids to etch away at a metal plate (usually zinc). The artist will mask out the areas of the plate that he/she doesn't want the acid to touch. This is done in several steps, over a period of several days. When the artist is satisfied with the image that is produced, he/she will carefully ink the plate by hand. All excess ink is then wiped away, leaving ink only in the crevices created by the acid. A moist piece of printing paper is then placed on top of the inked plate and passed through a press.
