Anonymous Onlooker
(hand pulled mezzotint)
dimensions: width=6", height=9"
This mysterious face staring back at you is done in a technique known as a mezzotint, which is a unique type of etching. The technique began in the eighteenth century. Many famous artists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries used this technique to produce remarkable results. The mezzotint is less common today, possibly because many artists find the technique too time consuming. Stephanie Grimes, has found that mezzotints can produce results that no other technique can. First she scratches the entire surface of a copper plate using a tool called a rocker. Then she uses a burnishing tool to highlight areas. The plate is then inked and run through the press. The result is a rich two tone picture with soft edges, almost photographic in nature.
